Split screen Android tablet

I use a Samsung Tab A9+ for everything. When I put split screen on, it’s too narrow for vertical viewing. When I rotate my tablet to landscape it’s just right. Didn’t it use to automatically show split screen in landscape without the settings?

I have been switching back and forth depending on what I’m doing.

Any ideas?

It tries to work out a good fit. Since we now have font scaling. It might need you to enlarge the font to stop portrait from splitting.
