K2HRC at US-9125 Coeymans Creek WMA in New York

This was an opportunistic operation near Albany, NY.

I was driving out to pick up my son from college, meeting him at a point halfway where a friend would drop him off, when the friend’s car got a flat tire. I stopped at a gas station, pulled out the POTA map on my phone and found the nearest park. This is why I always carry my “go bag” with me

It was already dark, but I had no problem setting up my POTA 20 mast with a quarter wave vertical and some radials, connected it to my FX-4CR and got 50 QSOs in 45 minutes. It was busy at first but 20m had pretty much closed down towards the end.

No photos because, well, I forgot, and it was dark anyways.

The club call had been granted earlier this same morning, so this was the very first operation using it. Someone even came back and asked for a confirmation because they could not find it on QRZ.

This is also the first park, first NY activation and first state activated using the call.

Good job on the club call and the first activation with it. Didn’t realize you got the FX4-CR, but mine is also in my car in case of a similar situation if it arises.

Using the club call, is it something that can be used any time or do you need to “reserve” it? I guess I’m just not sure if say you were activating in NY and I decided to use it here in PA at the same time, is that okay?

I’d like to avoid having it on the air from more than one place at exactly the same time, since that can be confusing to users, spots, etc.

But it’s not like you need to reserve it a week in advance or something like that. Just drop me a note to make sure nobody else is using it and you can run with it.

The discord channel is probably the best place to do a “real time request”.
