GitHub and Open source software

Hi Sebastian,

I thought this question might be better on this forum and it is I suppose a question about issues that can arise.

I do have a small understanding of Github and open source software, but I was wondering , am I correct in that anyone can take your app from Github and alter it to suit their needs and then use it. is there a copyright for your name of “Ham2K PoLo” that prevents anyone who alters it from using that name??

Anyone can take the code and build their own version.

If they use it just for themselves, it’s ok to leave the name of the app as it is in the code.

And while I cannot stop them from taking a build and putting it in the app stores, they cannot use the name Ham2K in that case. There are several legal avenues to prevent this, but in the end, I’m sure the community would probably give them terrible ratings.

So in short, do whatever you want, but please do not re-distribute it.

Now, if something were to happen, where for example I get tired of doing this, or I take a stupid position like “I will never support Supermarkets On The Air!!!”, then I guess someone could fork the app, give it a new name and convince the community that what they are doing is reasonable and keep the project going forward.

Making it open source is a way for me to ensure that you all have options in the future, and it also forces me to not ignore the community. And of course, it makes it possible for others to lend a hand, as it has been the case already.

Haha I wasn’t asking for me, Ive got no chance of developing Code, not with my Brain. I am happy to have you doing the lovely work you are doing and I for one will be using your app for as long as I can hold a mic!!

The reason I was asking was that last year there was an amazing piece of software that had been developed by a fantastic team here in the UK for MMDVM Boards. Anyway it was forked and a name change happened. It was available again as open source and visibly it was different on the desktop, but somewhere along the line it overtook the other app and I felt that the developer who started the original got disillusioned and there has not been an update in over a year?? I felt sorry for the team and the hard work they had done to get it to a stage that it worked very well.

So no don’t take my original post as me forking it, that’s the furthest from it. I actually want the opposite, you carry on and you can’t retire until as I say I can longer hold a mic :slightly_smiling_face:

That’s my plan too.
