Are you using your callsign and NOT email address? The api will NOT let you use your email address.

Yes, I was using my callsign for the login - but mentioning the XML API was the right hint.
The QRZ website login allows special characters but the XML API uses the password in plain text in the URL query - which will break with special characters…
changing my password fixed the issue.
